Medium and Style

Brian uses collage and oil paint on paper to emphasize the mood and contrast of form, texture and light. His work is known for the 'parchment like' torn edge of the paper, the use of divisions to establish a sense of time and contrast of space. He is now working with oil on canvas and oil on linen in a variety of sizes.

Themes

Maori Heritage - Many of Brian's works document New Zealand in relation to the Treaty of Waitangi. 'Really it is about the fact that the land does not belong to anyone, the Treaty is about the sharing of the land' says Brian.

The 'signature' parchment torn edges also nod towards old world, historic documentation and how our heritage has been recorded for posterity

New Zealand - The Nikau palm, a New Zealand icon, is used as a strong vertical element complimenting the panels of work. It also speaks of the growth of the nation. Contrasts of light and shade show the brooding nature of the New Zealand landscape. A strong sense of the land is a re-occuring theme.
